Macy and I have completed two weeks of our new diet program. It’s been pretty good for the most part but I have a couple gripes. Now I know the purpose is to lose weight in six weeks which is great. But what good is losing the weight fast by eating crazy meals just to gain it back on week seven by eating your normal meals again. No one can make crazy meal plans a lifestyle. You get sick of it and cheat, fall off the wagon, and gain weight. It’s just a fact.
So when I look at our upcoming week of food, I get a little peeved because one day we fast and then the next day we can only eat one fruit item all day and that’s it. Now I’m not a nutritionist but really? It’s not healthy. Now if you want to lose the weight healthy, and make it stay off, there’s a more proven strategy to take.
1) Eat healthy. Yes it rings true no matter who you ask. Eat your fruit servings, lots of veggies, get your protein fill in and drink lots of water. Minimize alcohol intake, and try not to drink soda. If you have a strong urge every once in a while, drink it. Eat a cookie or two. As long as its a rare occasion, it’s okay! You need to let yourself have things like that sometimes otherwise you’re going to get frustrated and quit or binge and it’s not worth it.
2) Get your exercise. I don’t mean you have to enter into marathons or compete with bodybuilders. Get your body moving somehow and to your own tune! If you like biking, do it! If you can walk and have a friend to join you, that’s great! Just aim for 30 min a day and if you can increase that over time, I’d say that’s a success! Plus you will feel wonderful. It’s true!
3) Use alternatives to your everyday cooking. I used to use butter in everything I cooked. I’d use it to fry things, to put on rice or pasta, or even just to coat the pan for eggs or something. But replacing items like butter can make a huge difference in your figure without sacrificing taste. Here’s a few tips: replace butter with coconut oil. Replace vegetable oil or canola oil with extra virgin olive oil (or applesauce in recipes like cake or cookies) and right there you are taking out fats and calories and switching it to a healthy form of omega 3!
It’s subtle changes in your habits that can help you lose weight. Not crash dieting and hard core exercises that you’ll never keep up with. Make it a lifestyle and not a short term program and you’ll see differences long after six weeks 🙂

Sarah
