Over the course of the last couple years, but primarily this past year, I’ve been experimenting with protein recipes. Teaching group fitness classes 3-4x a week, lifting 2x a week, plus chasing after a toddler all day means I need to up my protein intake and sometimes that means I need to get creative because a girl can only eat so much chicken.
So I’ve tried the cake-in-a-mug, and protein balls, which were meh, at best… but then I tried protein donuts and ever since, I’ve been OBSESSED. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen these in my story time and time again, because I’m in love with this recipe.
I found the original protein donut recipe on Andrea’s Protein Cakery and then I ended up tweaking it to make it fit with ingredients I typically have on hand. So if you’re interested in getting your protein intake while eating something delicious for once, keep on reading.
Also, if you find yourself making donuts like crazy like I am now, I would recommend investing in a good silicone donut pan. I bought mine on Amazon for about $10 and it has definitely been well worth the money. Before the pan, I was trying to shape the dough perfectly, and it just doesn’t work very well. This pan is a must-have and worth every penny!
Best Tasting Protein Donut Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 Bananas (mashed)
- 120 grams protein (I use Legion dutch chocolate, use promo code SarahC for 20% off)
- 2 Tbsp honey
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 4 Tbsp cacao powder
Protein Donut Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, mix together mashed bananas and honey. Then gradually add in dry ingredients, one by one. Mix all ingredients together until you achieve a little thicker than brownie-like consistency.
–> If it is too runny, add a little more protein powder
–> If it is too thick, add a little warm water or milk
Spray silicone donut pan with cooking spray, then pour mixture into molds. Check at 15 minutes, and add 1-2 minutes until donuts are cooked all the way through.
Icing Directions:
In a small bowl, use a small spoon to mix together 3-4 Tbsp powdered sugar with 1/2 tsp warm water. Experiment until you reach desired icing consistency.
Allow donuts to cool, then drizzle icing.
Serve and enjoy!
Protein Powders
Trust me once you make this recipe, you won’t be the same. They’re so good!! Now if you’re looking for protein powder recommendations, I really like the taste of Legion Dutch Chocolate protein powder (use promo code SarahC for 20%) and I trust their brand a lot for clean ingredients. If you already have a protein powder that you really like, definitely go with that and see how it goes!
Troubleshooting
The only issue I’ve come across is dealing with the varying scoop size when using different protein powders. So play around with the amount of protein powder and if it tastes too dry when they’re done, I’d recommend using less protein powder or increasing banana or honey quantities.

Theresa
Could you tell me the amount in grams of the protein powder?
Sarah
Hi Theresa,
It would be around 50g of protein powder. I hope that helps!
Kayla
I made them and love them, even my kids enjoy them, so that’s a huge win!
I’m wondering if you have a
Break down per donut?? Like cal, protien, fat etc.
Thank you!!
Excited to try more of your recipes

I made these this morning and I couldn’t even eat it …it was so dry and crumbled in my mouth like sawdust. I have no idea what I did wrong but I followed your directions to the T. Any suggestions? I love all the ingredients but wow it was terrible.
Sarah
Oh no! That sounds awful. They should be nice and moist. Did you maybe have the temp too high or accidentally cook too long? If you try again, you could try adding a little olive oil (maybe 1 Tbsp?) to add some moisture. Come back and let me know if that helps! 🙁
