I usually make it a rule in our house that there are no phones allowed at the dinner table. They’re distracting, they’re annoying and just kinda disrespectful to your company. And it’s totally doable to have a meal without phones involved. Did you know that? Most kids don’t, but it’s not voodoo that I speak of, it’s quality time. For our latest dinner out to Perkins, I made a strict rule: absolutely no phones will be seen at any point. We were going to enjoy a nice meal together, sip the final taste of summer (Gold Peak Tea) and enjoy each other’s company. That doesn’t sound like torture, does it? I don’t think so either. We chose Perkins because A) it felt fitting for a quiet family meal on a weeknight and B) because they serve Gold Peak Tea. And as you are painfully aware of, summer is coming to a close and these moments pass fast. I wanted to maybe start a new tradition of getting the family together on the first week of school (that was this week for us!) and close out our summer in style.
The Gold Peak Tea is the kicker for me, because growing up my mom and my grandma would always have iced tea in the fridge for those hot summer days. Now whenever I have a glass, I think of all the summer fun that we had and the memories me and my sisters had with that. It’s funny how a little drink can be so nostalgic sometimes! Since we had no phones at the dinner table, I did bring something special to liven things up a little bit (and to remember the moment). My old school camera was a fun way to capture our time together and the silly memories from the night. My daughter had never seen an old school camera before (I mean, she’s 3 and they haven’t really been a popular commodity at her age lol!) so she thought seeing the photo printed out right away was kind of neat! So we took some fun photos, and some cute ones, and just enjoyed the night, unplugged.
Unplugged Meal: How to Make it Memorable
If you’re planning an unplugged meal with your family, here are a few ways to make the meal even more memorable!
- Bring a few activities to enjoy together (a game, props, cards, etc.)
- Come prepared with a few conversation starters
- Try something new off the menu and split it
- Pick something to make ‘tradition’ each year at your meal
- Play a few dinner table games
- Leave the phones in the car, it gives less temptation to check them
I challenge you and your family to an unplugged meal sometime this month. It’s really kind of a fun way to reconnect and shut out the world for a brief moment. Leave the stresses of work and school behind and just make some memories together.
Challenge is on! Will you accept?
Hearts, Sarah
