We received a mattress to test out for this post. All opinions are mine.
When I first had my daughter, I wasn’t really aware that there were ‘different’ kinds of crib mattresses. You kind of just assume they’re all the same, kind of like everything else you put on your baby registry. So a few months ago, when I was made aware of this new mattress from Newton Baby, I felt a little sheepish and amazed all at the same time.
I read that, and thought hmmm, now I’m interested, tell me more. How is that possible that a mattress would give me, a mom, peace of mind? I dug in for more details.
The Safer Mattress for Babies
The re-invented mattress is revolutionary for it’s cushion of freely circulating air, making it an ideal solution for safety and comfort in your little one’s crib. Why is that a safety solution? Because statistics have shown that babies die in their cribs in their first year than anywhere else – and beyond that, suffocation is the leading cause of non-injury related deaths among babies.
Of course, we all know that it’s recommended babies are placed on their backs to sleep, however a recent Harvard study warned that safe-sleep guidelines have done nothing to reduce infant deaths in 25 years.
Interesting, right?
Lead author of the Harvard study, Professor Joel Bass, chair of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital department of pediatrics in Massachusetts, said, “There actually has been a dramatic and unexpected increase in deaths attributed to suffocation and asphyxiation in both newborns and infants up to one-year-old, and these deaths are potentially preventable.”
That’s why Newton Baby set out to provide a safer, better sleep for babies and they believe that many of these deaths from suffocation are avoidable with the simple solution of a breathable sleeping surface. That’s not a benefit of your typical mattress.
Newton’s mattress is a mix between a cushy bed but with firmness. They have a patented “Wovenaire®” core that is made of 90% free air and 10% safe, food-grade polymer. Who knew that was all possible? It’s all wrapped together in a 3D spacer cover including two layers of Breathe-Thru fabric essentially allowing your little one to sleep on a pillow of air.
It’s washable, it’s breathable, it’s recyclable.
Newton Baby founder Michael Rothbard says, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve received from parents to the Newton Crib Mattress. They tell us all the time how they’re amazed that they can breathe right through it and can now rest better with peace of mind, knowing their baby is sleeping safe.” Rothbard continues, “Now, we’re extremely pleased to make the breathable sleeping surface that so many parents love in our mattress accessible to even more families.”
The Crib Mattresses retail for $299.99, and the mini crib mattresses are sold for $249.99.
Newton Baby will also be releasing a Crib Mattress Pad on April 6th, with an expected retail price of $69.99.
My Thoughts.
I have loved having the new mattress for my daughter, and wish I would have had it sooner for her! She seems to sleep very well on it (give or take her nights of being a typical toddler) and I do feel more at ease knowing that it’s the safer option for her.
If we do have more kids down the road, I will also feel much more comfortable at night knowing that they are on a breathable surface in the event that babies do roll over onto their stomach (which they always manage to do). I remember waking up with my daughter when she was merely months old and checking on her just to make sure she hadn’t rolled over, and to ensure she was still breathing (is that a first time mom thing? maybe..) but either way, this has been a relief and a much safer option to a traditional crib mattress. I would definitely recommend them!
See the mattresses here, and shop them in three different colors; white, pink or blue!
If you order one, please come back and let me know what you think! I love hearing your feedback.
Until next time,
Sarah
