I decided I would make my own baby food for baby. Why not, right??? It is cheaper, it is super easy and you can use fresh fruit and veggies (or frozen – but at least you know what is in the baby food)! I had my plan all worked out. I had ideas of what foods I wanted to start out with. I had my Magic Bullet ready (or try the Baby Bullet).
But what was I going to do about storage!?!?! Bean (aka baby) hasn’t yet started on veggies and fruits, but I wanted to get started making it. So I’m going to freeze it. But in what? And what about serving sizes? Well, I stumbled across a perfect solution! Ice cube trays!!!
I had a few trays on hand and using them was so easy! A downside though, it’s hard to keep them covered and therefore fresh. There are lots of containers made for homemade baby food though, and if you have time, I’d recommended ordering a few and going with that. You’ll definitely get your use out of them!
How to Make Homemade Baby Food
Step 1: Blend your fresh fruit and/or vegetable
Step 2: Add breast milk or formula to get to desired consistency
Step 3: Pour baby food into ice cube tray (I’m going to pick up some cute ones at Target or the dollar store)
Step 4: Place in freezer
Step 5: When baby food is frozen, transfer cubes to plastic bag to store
Step 6: When ready to feed, take desired amount of food out of the freezer and warm to desired temp – each cube is approximately 1 oz
And serve!!!! Easy-peasy!!!
Here is what I started out with…
1 Butternut squash ($2.33 at Target) + 8 oz formula = 22 oz baby food
1 Avocado ($1.50 at Aldi) + 2 oz formula (it was a little thick) = 12 oz baby food
1 Mango ($1.50 at Aldi) + 4 oz formula = 8 oz baby food
16 oz jar Green Beans (Free from DH’s grandparent’s garden) + 4 oz formula = 12 oz baby food
Total cost: $5.33
Total oz of baby food made: 54 oz
Average cost for homemade food: $0.10/oz ($0.13/oz not including the free beans)
Average cost for store bought food: $0.25/oz (Earth’s Best or Gerber)
I already had Bean try the Avocado. She loved it!!!
Until next time,

What company makes those circular green trays?

I found them at Cub Food… I think they are possibly made by Wilton?
