I’ve been there. You drive an hour (or close to it) just to get to work in the morning and then spend over that amount of time driving home and dealing with traffic. If you’re driving the right vehicle, the time spent in the car can be a little bit easier to manage. So what makes a great commuter vehicle? I like to consider three factors; gas mileage, comfort, and reliability. With those things in mind, I’ve chosen my top five picks for stellar commuter cars. If you’re looking for a new vehicle that you’ll be using as a commuter, listen up!
- Honda Civic LX – First off with this vehicle, the gas mileage is awesome. It gets 31 mpg city, and 41 mpg highway – since most commuting is spent on the highway, that’s the only number I’m concerned with! As far as comfort goes, I think Civics are extremely comfortable, and especially reliable. I’d have no problem driving a Honda Civic as a commuter vehicle.
- Honda CR-V – Let’s say you want a little bit more cargo space in your commuter vehicle, maybe you have to pick the kids up from school on the way home or run them to sports after work. The CR-V is a great option to have the best of both worlds; you get the cargo space you need and great gas mileage (31 mpg highway) for an SUV. This vehicle also comes with AWD if you are commuting in a state (ahem – like Minnesota) where you need the extra traction in the winter.
- Chevrolet Impala – I think Cars.com put it best when they picked the Chevy Impala as one of the ‘Best Cars for Commuters 2016’, they basically said that although the gas mileage isn’t great for a sedan (31 mpg highway), there’s something to be said about comfort and quiet to take the edge off your drive after a long day. So true!
- Ford C-Max – This hybrid offers both electric and gas options. It uses electric, then switches over to the hybrid for about 37 mpg. Although seemingly small, owners of this vehicle have said they have plenty of room and comfort. I have not driven one personally but it was also chosen by Consumer Reports as one of ‘The Most Satisfying Commuter Cars’ so I definitely think it’d be worth checking out.
- Volkswagen Passat – A mid-size sedan from Volkswagen, it’s bigger than the Jetta but similar in efficiency. It gets up to 39 mpg highway (yes, awesome gas mileage!) and is super comfortable. It is spacious with seating (and plenty cargo area in the trunk) making it a great choice for commuting.
These are my five top picks for commuting vehicles! If you have one to add to the list, leave a comment below!
