The other day as I was waiting for my oil to be changed, I got to thinking – I wonder what the most commonly performed car services and repairs are. I assumed oil changes, tire rotations, but beyond that, I wasn’t quite sure. I did some research and I talked to my friendly Pennsylvania Dodge dealer to get some answers.
Now something to note is that these seem to vary from year to year and probably from place to place as well. So the ranking here is loosely based, but you get the idea! The ranking I’m giving you here is based off a study conducted by AutomotiveResearch.com (IMRinc). Let’s take a look!
Top 10 Most Commonly Performed Car Repairs/Services
10. Getting wheels aligned or balanced
9. Engine tune up
8. Adding antifreeze
7. Work on the brakes
6. Replacing the battery
5. Installing new tires
4. Scheduled maintenance
3. Replacing air filter
2. Replacing wiper blades
1. Oil change (and oil filter)
Does that seem about right based on your experience? It seems to be right on par for our vehicles. Other honorable mentions include turning or replacing your rotors, catalytic converter replacement, heating and cooling issues, fuel pump, and steering fixes.
With these repairs in mind, you might want to consider a few options to help keep costs low. Firstly, taking advantage of your factory warranty or extended warranty can help to relieve some of the costs associated with car service repairs. Also, make sure that you are keeping on top of any vehicle recalls you might have. A good way to do this is to register your vehicle with Carfax. It will automatically email you when there is a recall issued for your vehicle and you’ll most likely find out long before you ever receive a letter in the mail from the manufacturer.
Beyond that, make sure that you’re performing your regularly scheduled maintenance as necessary to prevent any large mechanical breakdowns or issues from neglecting to perform the standard routine maintenance.
