Fortunately as I write this article, gas prices aren’t too bad. But within the past year or so, they have fluctuated enough to be conscious about where the pricing is at when you fill up your tank. It made me wonder, is there a way to not be a slave to the prices of the gas station? With as much as I was spending on gas, there had to be a way to save – if even just a little bit – which could add up over time.
“There are plenty of ways to save money on filling up your gas tank, you just need to dig a little.” Says a New Jersey Dodge dealer. “Just look for the programs that would maximize your savings and stick with them to save big over time.”
Rewards Programs
One of the biggest ways to save on gas is to enroll in a rewards program for your frequently visited gas stations. Super America has a program called Speedy Rewards which allows you to rack up points when you fill up at the pump. You can redeem the points for food, drink or gas coupons. You can also save 3 cents per gallon when you swipe your rewards card at the pump (this may be seasonal, depending on their program).
Holiday stations also have a program with Cub Foods where you sign up for a My Cub Rewards card which after making a certain amount of purchases at Cub Foods, you will automatically have an XX cents off per gallon coupon loaded onto your card. This varies depending on the amount you spend on groceries but if you’re spending lots on groceries each month, it would make sense to also save on gas because of it!
Exxon also has a rewards program that can earn you points for filling up at the pump. You receive 3 points per gallon pumped, and eventually you can redeem these points for savings on gas, car washes, coffee, etc.
Coupons
If you pay close attention to the receipts at your local grocery store, or flyers mailed out to you, you might find that they contain certain coupons for gas in your area. Clip these and carry them in your vehicle with you. The downside is, you’ll need to pay inside. But the upside is that you can save a good amount when you are filling up your gas tank. Plus, many gas stations will accept competitor coupons so even if you don’t use them at the given station, you may still be able to use them.
