Minnesota winters are notorious for being rough. For as long as I can remember, they’ve caused a lot of stress. The icy roads, the low visibility while driving and snowing, the inability to stop at a moment’s notice, the list goes on and on.
For my senior broadcast journalism project in college, I did a segment on how to make sure you are safe when winter rolls around. It involved doing some research on my part, and of course memorizing every little detail about the topic. That being said, I’ve got some good tips for you guys for staying safe this winter when it comes to your vehicle.
Getting Your Car Ready For Winter
- Stash the inside with extra winter apparel. This includes a hat, mittens, an extra jacket, maybe a blanket, and some hand warmers are a nice touch.
- Be prepared in case of an emergency. You never know what turns life will throw at you, so make sure you have some water, a few granola bars or snacks, and a first aid kit.
- Keep a close eye on your fuel gauge. This is one of the last times you’re going to want to run out of gas! If it’s plausible, carry along a gas can just in case.
- Carry along a phone charger. Just in case something does happen, you will want to make sure your phone is charged and you can call for help.
- Do a tire check, and make sure that your tires have adequate tread and are in good condition.
- Stock your vehicle with jumper cables, an ice scraper, and (optional) chains.
