There have been many times where my car needed work and I’d bring it in to see a mechanic. I feel like they’d take one look at me, assume I was clueless, and tell me I needed a whole lot of work done that I didn’t need done. I’d insist that no, I just need an oil change, and of course they’d have a long list of other thing that I must have done.
Over time, I found there are some key components to choosing a mechanic. And today, I figured I’d share my tips and tricks.
- Ask friends and family for referrals. This is my number one tip, and I could pretty much stop after this one! Just think of it as your friends and family having done the work for you. They’ve found a credible, honest and wonderful mechanic and would be happy to share their info with you.
- Check out Angie’s List. This is a resource where people rate their service providers and give honest feedback. It is a subscription based service though, somewhere around $4 a month, but if you’re regularly looking for service experts, it’s worth the cost.
- Utilize Yelp. Yelp.com is another great resource that uses other people’s reviews of a business. You can find out whether that body shop down the road is going to be as great as you think!
- Ask your social media. Though your Facebook and Twitter friends may be all over the world, more often than not you also have many of them right nearby. Ask them for good referrals for a place to take your car for a specific service. You’ll likely get several suggestions, then do your research and check them out online.
I hope that helps you to find a great mechanic for your vehicle. It can be a tough process, but once you find a great service provider, hang on to them! 🙂
