You’ve heard it before I’m sure, that the color of your car can affect your car insurance rates. I heard it back when I was working in the industry and people would be wary of buying red cars because of the thought that it would be expensive to insure. So what do you think, fact or fiction? I did some research and talked with my Georgia Jeep dealer friends to find out whether or not this was a valid concern for car buyers.
Does Color Matter?
If you’ve bought into this theory, you’re not alone. In fact, about 44% of people in a recent survey done by InsuranceQuotes.com thought that red cars would affect your car insurance costs. But the truth of the matter is, the insurance company doesn’t care what color your vehicle is. It actually isn’t even a question on their forms for submitting. This myth seems to have been going strong for decades now, and it’s difficult to pinpoint where it started. However the bottom line is; it doesn’t matter what color your car is, your insurance premium will be the same.
What Does Matter?
So now that you’ve ruled out the color of your car, what else should you be worried about when it comes to car insurance premiums? Well typically your car insurance provider will look at your driving record, your insurance claims history, the make/model/year of your vehicle, the other people on your insurance policy, how often you drive, and that type of thing. Yep, that’s right, you didn’t see color on that list, did you?
With all that information being thrown at you, it’s easy to be a little overwhelmed when making a decision about buying a new car. Don’t get intimidated by all the information out there though, and especially not misinformation regarding the color of your car. Instead, go with something you feel good about driving. Make sure it’s safe, it fits your budget, and it fits the needs you have on a daily basis. That all being considered when you make your decision, you really can’t go wrong.
