This time of year, it seems that driving conditions can change at the drop of a hat. It’s hard to know what is around the corner at any given minute. To help you stay safe this winter, here are some tips to help avoid an accident.
Typically, auto accidents occur due to four things; driver error, the design of roadway, auto equipment failure, and poor road maintenance. Addressing these four areas can help you to avoid future incidents, lots of body shop work, or buying a new vehicle sooner than you may have intended.
Get your vehicle maintained frequently. To prevent equipment failure, ensure your steering, suspension, tires and brakes are all working properly and efficiently. These are all major components to your vehicle and must be taken care of regularly to prevent failure.
Know your roads and pay attention to signage. Although many motorists will blame the road design for their accidents, the design itself is developed by engineers with special considerations to a variety of things including traffic, weather, signage, surfaces, visibility and more. By knowing your surroundings and roadways, and by abiding by road signs, you can be on the safe side.
Be cautious on untreated roadways. In poor weather conditions, the roadway maintenance crews have a large job on their hand. It’s impossible to attend to all the roads at once, but they do their best to get to them all in a timely manner. Because you never know what exactly is underneath you, it’s best to play it safe and drive cautiously when roads have been affected by the weather. Black ice, pot holes, heavy rain and slush can all catch drivers off guard and it’s easy to lose control.
Drive responsibly and safely. It’s easy to get caught up with traffic, to get thinking about something, or to get hot-tempered if another driver offends you. But it’s important to take your role as a responsible driver seriously. Obey speed limits, no passing zones, construction zones, and traffic laws. The more alert you are, the safer you are.
And ultimately, the safer you are, the safer everyone else on the road is as well. If you do happen to find yourself in a collision, make sure you know what to do in a car accident.
