You’ve heard the phrase, “New year, new me” right? Well I’m not typically one to set your usual New Year’s goals like weight loss but I did think of a few goals to strive for when it comes to your driving this year. Didn’t see that one coming, did you? Now not all of these will apply to you of course, but they are some ideas on pulling a couple things to strive for this year.
I reached out to my friends at a well-known Illinois Ford dealer to get some tips on what might be good to shoot for this year when it comes to good goals for your driving time. Here’s what they had to say, and also a couple items that I added as well!
Make 2019 the year of awesome, behind the wheel
ONE) Put down the phone. This is possibly the most important and most prevalent rule these days. Whether it’s a phone call, a text or directions to your destination; the message is the same. Put down the phone. We all know distracted driving is a large cause of car accidents, so let’s just do our part and keep our attention on the road.
TWO) Always wear your seatbelt. Back in the day, I wasn’t always consistent about wearing my seatbelt. It seemed to be something pretty optional so I put it on when I remembered. Then I realized in a split second how precious life is, and how big of a difference a simple seat belt can make between life and death sometimes. Just wear your seatbelt, trust me on this one.
THREE) Double check your blind spots. Even though now days technology has made us a little lazy when it comes to this step, even the newest technology can fail us sometimes and then we’re out of luck. I’ve found this to be the case driving and if I hadn’t double checked that blind spot for myself, it would have been a crash course in sideswiping. (See what I did there?)
FOUR) Stick to the speed limit. Yes, we have places to go. Yes, going faster will get us there sooner. But for one, it can be a little careless to surpass the speed limit and two, your gas mileage goes down quite a bit once you jump above around 60 mph.
FIVE) Start checking the cross-sections at stop lights. My husband taught me this one recently and let me tell you, I’m not sure why I hadn’t been doing this more. Basically, you’re double checking to make sure everyone has stopped at their red light before you proceed on your green light. For the longest time, I had just trusted that when the light turned green we were good to go. Well, that’s not always the case and really you shouldn’t put a whole lot of trust in anyone when you’re on the road.
