This time of year is notorious for when college kids are starting to pack up their things and get ready to head off to school. They usually start classes after Labor Day so they need to be all moved in and ready before that. Your college student may be focused on everything for their dorm bedroom and class materials, but what they may overlook is what they should be equipping their car with as well. Don’t let them get caught empty-handed in an unforeseen event! Here are ten things to help them pack in their vehicle before they head off to school this fall.
1. First Aid Kit – Whether they are in an accident, or with someone who hurts themselves while they are out and about; it’s always a great idea to have a small first aid kit on hand.
2. Spare Tire and Jack – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone on a trip just to get stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire. Make sure they have a spare tire in place along with a car jack as well, and even more than that, make sure they know how to use it if they need to!
3. Gas Can – It happens to the best of us, doesn’t it? We run out of gas and we’re miles from the last gas station. Well a small gas can with a little gas in it can make a big difference if you find yourself trapped on the side of the road with no fuel.
4. Emergency Money or Credit Card – Safely tuck away an emergency fund ($20 or a credit card works) for one of those ‘just in case’ moments. Maybe they forget their wallet and get low on gas, or need something and it’s an emergency. Whatever the situation, it’s great to be prepared.
5. Tire Pressure Gauge – With the changing weather, your tires can change in pressure without you really knowing. A New York Jeep dealer recommends you always keep a tire pressure gauge in your glovebox and check your tires regularly. If they notice their tires looking a little low, they can pull out the handy tire pressure gauge and check to see if they need to add air. Make sure they know how to use this as well before they head off to school!
