Hopefully you’ve never had to deal with being in an auto accident. But in the event that you ever do find yourself in the unfortunate situation, it’s important to know what steps to take when involved in a car accident. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are around 10 million auto collisions every year. So to help you to be prepared, here are some helpful tips to consider, just in case.
#1 – First, stop and dial 911. It doesn’t matter how severe the accident, it’s important to always report the incident. Move vehicles out of traffic and switch on your hazards.
#2 – Check on the safety of all those involved. This is important to be able to relay to the 911 operator as well.
#3 – Exchange insurance details. Once you’ve hopefully discovered that everyone is okay, be sure to swap insurance information including full names, phone numbers, license plates, addresses, driver’s licenses, and auto insurance information.
#4 – Snap some photos. It’s important to document the damage to your vehicle as soon as possible before it is moved or monkeyed with. These pictures are helpful when filing your insurance claim and are equally nice to have in the rare event you have to go to court for some reason.
#5 – Phone your insurance company. Once you’ve got all your details collected, call your insurance agent and report the accident to them. They will also be able to help you with the next steps you need to take to get your vehicle repaired.
I hope you never have to put these steps into effect, but in the event that you do, you’re now a little more prepared which can make a big difference in something as frightening as an auto accident.
