It’s a cost that we are constantly paying when it comes to our vehicles. For me personally, I usually fill up my tank at least once a week and although gas prices are low right now, the cost adds up over time. So how do you save yourself money in the long run by getting better gas mileage? Here are some tips to consider.
- Maintain your vehicle. Keep up with your oil changes, keep an eye on tire pressure, and air filters, to name just a few.
- Don’t leave your car idle. After around 10 seconds, your vehicle is running unnecessarily. If you plan to leave your car running while waiting for your family, picking up a friend, or whatever it may be, consider turning off your vehicle. You’re wasting gas, which is just costing you money.
- Only run the A/C when necessary. Since running the A/C can cause your engine to work harder, turning it off when you don’t really need it can ultimately save you gas (and money!)
- Go the speed limit. Did you know that by driving above or below 65 mph can decrease your gas mileage by as much as 15%? It’s true. So leave a little bit early so you’re not having to rush.
- Get rid of drag. That extra cargo box or roof rack can be causing your vehicle extra drag and instead of streamlining your drive, you’re creating resistance for your vehicle.
- Calm your drive. If you’re hard braking, or accelerating, you’re taking a toll on your gas milage. By eliminating these hard starts and stops, you can ultimately increase your gas mileage! It’s worth it. And why are you driving crazy like that anyways?! 😉
I hope these tips help you to save a little extra in your pocketbook each month. What tips do you have for increasing gas mileage? I’d love to hear in the comments below!
