This time of year is particularly hard on a car’s battery and although I hope you don’t have to deal with it personally, there may come a time when you need to jump start your vehicle. Save time and energy by knowing the steps to jump starting your vehicle.
*Important Note* Make sure that once your cables are live (hooked up to at least one port) that you don’t touch them together. Safety first!
1 – You’ll need a live vehicle to jump you. And as a precaution, it’s a wise idea to always carry a pair of jumper cables with you at all times in your car, just in case!
2 – Park your vehicles with your engines as close to each other without your cars touching. Raise the hoods and ensure that the vehicles are both turned off.
3 – Start with ‘red on dead’ (this is how I remember it). Place the red clip to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
4 – Work your way through the clips, with the other red clip on the positive terminal of the live vehicle.
5 – Secure a black clip to the negative terminal of the live vehicle.
6 – Finally, the last remaining black clip should be secured to a metal unpainted surface on your vehicle that isn’t near the battery.
7 – Start up the engine of the other vehicle (the live one) and let it run for a couple minutes.
8 – Attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery. If it doesn’t turn over right away, wait another couple minutes and then attempt to start it again.
9 – If you’re still not getting anything, recheck your connections and then try again. Hopefully this will do the trick!
When the vehicle with the dead battery is finally started, don’t turn it off! Let it recharge via your alternator for at least 15 minutes, but preferably longer. I hope this tutorial helps to save you some time in the cold this winter. Or even if it’s the summer, knowing the steps you need to take to jump start your car is always handy information!
