Technology is amazing, isn’t it? This day and age, you can start your vehicle from inside a nice warm building – it’s a wonderful invention. But some people will argue that the auto-start is anything but wonderful. So is this new technology good or bad? Let’s look at the facts and let you decide!
The Pro’s
- You don’t have to sit in as cold of a car. (However, it has been found that actually driving your new vehicle will warm it up faster than it running idly.) You don’t actually need to idle your car for it to perform well. All it really needs is roughly half a minute to get the oil circulating. If you must let it run for your interior temperature comfort, only allow it for a couple minutes, otherwise… well have a read into the con’s section below.
The Con’s
- You’re wasting money. Leaving your car running can obviously waste gas but in the end, ultimately loses you that money. Not to mention, if your vehicle idles for long periods of time, it can cause buildup on your spark plugs making them less efficient.
- Idling forces your engine to operate and use gasoline inefficiently. This can affect your engine’s performance over time and decrease your milage.
- Your vehicle is producing carbon dioxide polluting the air. This is harmful for anyone breathing in those fumes.
Overall, remote starters can run a vehicle from 5 to 30 minutes which is generally unnecessary. If you’re worried about your engine having a hard time in the cold, a block heater can heat your engine on a timer set to before you need to go somewhere and is very helpful in cold weather.
What do you think? Which side do you think outweighs the other?
